He was the son of the third marriage of a minor customs official who had been born an illegitimate child who for his first thirty-nine years of his life bore his mother's name. His name appears in the maternal as well as the paternal line. Both his grandmother on his mother's side and his grandfather on his father's side had variants of the same name. His mother was his father's second cousin, and an episcopal dispensation had to be obtained for the marriage. Illegitmacy is frequent and is intermarriage is common. His grandfather was a wanderer. His first wife and child died. Eighteen year later he remarried. Five years before that marriage his new bride had had an illegitimate son. His son became the father of the new messiah, Adolf Hitler.
