Today, Obama compromised yet another of his campaign pledges – to stop the climate of earmarks and “pork” spending that have been a way of life in Washington. He signed the Omnibus Appropriations Bill (HB1105) containing more than 8000 earmarks and pork costing $6 billion. I guess he hasn't lost his appetite for reckless spending yet, even after squandering untold billions on various bailout and stimulus schemes and political payoffs with no accountability. With the quiet acceptance of this massive spending bill, he has lost his credibility with the taxpayers. One would have thought that there was enough pork in the 1000 plus page stimulus bill to satisfy both him and the Congress. He is carrying on the profligate tax-and-spend policies that have long characterized the Democrat Party. Looks like this part of the much ballyhooed “change” has come to an early end, even before his first 100 days in office have elapsed.
His excuse this time was that the government needs the money to keep operating as though it hasn’t been humming right along since the budget was supposed to be passed last October. I wonder what his lame excuse will be next time when pork shows up. He probably cut a deal with Party to let all of them go through this time as a payoff for showing some restraint next time so he can show how “hard” he is on earmarks and pork. He had a chance for a statesman-like decision with an act of courage but he came up wanting. Let’s hope the voters take note of how little regard he has for his campaign promises and our current dire financial straits.
